Motor Coordination Disorder

Motor Coordination Disorders are a group of conditions that affect a person’s ability to plan and execute movements effectively. These conditions, including Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), apraxia, and ataxia, can range from difficulties with basic tasks like grasping objects to complex skills like writing or riding a bike. Symptoms often include clumsiness, poor balance, difficulty with fine and gross motor skills, and trouble following sequential movements. Therapy treatment at Mind Body Child focuses on improving motor coordination through therapy and skill development.
Here’s a breakdown of motor coordination disorders:
Types of Motor Coordination Disorders:
- Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD): This is the most common motor coordination disorder, affecting around 5-6% of school-aged children. It’s characterized by a significant delay in developing motor skills or problems with coordination despite normal intelligence.
- Apraxia: This is a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to plan and carry out purposeful movements. It can impact speech, writing, and fine motor skills.
- Ataxia: This is a condition that causes problems with balance, coordination, and speech. It can be caused by various underlying conditions like stroke, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy.
Symptoms of Motor Coordination Disorders:
- Difficulty with fine motor skills like grasping objects, buttoning clothes, or writing
- Problems with gross motor skills like walking, running, or catching a ball
- Clumsy gait or awkward movements
- Poor balance and coordination
- Difficulty planning and executing sequential movements
- Speech problems (in some cases)
